For the first time in 22 years of existence, Dubai’s most famous hotel, the Burj Al Arab Jumeirah, is hosting an art exhibition in a new temporary space on site. Running until January 2022, the inaugural exhibition is dedicated to a solo presentation of unpublished works by Anglo-Indian artist Anish Kapoor.

Located on the first floor of the hotel, the pop-up space will last at least six months. The project is a first collaboration between the landmark of the luxury hotel industry and the Galleria Continua, which has represented the artist for more than two decades.

Over a breathtaking view of the ocean are seven of Kapoor’s sculptures: two large colored discs in lacquered stainless steel and executed in 2021; 2017 highly polished and reflective steel globes Alice series, which refers to Lewis Carroll’s children’s novel Alice in Wonderland; and works in alabaster. “His work speaks to everyone,” Lorenzo Fiaschi, co-founder of Galleria Continua, said at the press preview. “He talks about the universe: colors, reflection, light.

Kapoor was absent from the press preview due to travel restrictions linked to the pandemic, but hotel general manager Ermanno Zanini joined Fiaschi to deliver speeches at the opening. “Art is a strong element for the Burj Al Arab, for Dubai too. The hotel itself is a work of art. It’s a sculpture, ”explains Zanini, who initiated the artistic partnership between the Burj and the Galleria Continua.

Located on a man-made island, the hotel’s sail-shaped inclusion of a contemporary art space is designed to enhance the experience of its guests. According to the Continua website, the space is accessible by reservation by art collectors, advisers, curators and enthusiasts.

Although the Fiaschi Gallery, which has outposts in China, France and Cuba, among others, does not have a permanent space in the region, it has long participated in the local fairs of the United Arab Emirates: Art Dubai and Abu Dhabi Art.
