Weather changes are challenges to our immune system, which is why some fall ill during these changes, health experts say, pointing to the visible increase in visits to clinics and hospitals during the recent period of unstable weather.

Doctors say changes in humidity levels can weaken your immune system, leaving you vulnerable to germs and disease.

Dr Salwa Abdel Zaher Mabrouk Ibrahim, an internal medicine consultant and clinical professor at Thumbay University Hospital, said climate change mainly challenges our immune system. Dust storms, rising temperatures and humidity levels signal health issues, primarily infectious diseases and allergies, he said. “When our body gets used to a certain climate, and if there is a sudden change, our body tries to adapt to the change. Unfortunately, our bodies sometimes have difficulty adapting, which can trigger diseases,” explained Dr. Ibrahim.

Highlighting the recent temperature swings and sandstorms across the country, Dr Sarla Kumari, a physician and diabetologist at the Canadian Specialty Hospital in Dubai, said people with weakened immune systems and respiratory problems should do Pay particular attention to these times. “Those with weakened immune systems and underlying allergies are more prone to viral infections due to sudden weather changes,” she said.

Doctors say when the weather gets warmer it can trigger ear, nose and throat (ENT) infections, nasal allergies which can be seasonal (intermittent) or chronic (persistent). “These are due to exposure to different germs (which can be bacterial, viral or fungal), as well as exposure to allergens which can thrive in such weather conditions. As the weather changes, new allergens are introduced or there are higher concentrations of certain allergens in the air, triggering reactions in people allergic to specific allergens,” said Dr Ibrahim.

Doctors say the rapid rise in heat also compromises the body’s ability to regulate temperature, which can lead to illnesses including heat cramps, heat exhaustion, heat stroke, and more.

Temperature fluctuations also affect our mood, studies have shown. “There is evidence that one can feel irritable or sluggish during weather fluctuations, especially in hot or dusty weather,” Dr Kumari said.

Extreme weather changes can also affect quality of life, limiting daily activities, leading to increased stress, anxiety and depression. “Joint flare-ups and mood swings when the weather turns are very real for many people around the world,” Dr. Ibrahim said.

“You have to be careful during dust storms. Wear masks and try to avoid rapid temperature changes when coming in from the heat or going out in the heat. Talk to your doctor if you experience any allergy symptoms like cold, sore throat, runny nose or itchy eyes,” Dr. Kumari advised.

How to protect yourself in fluctuating weather

  • Practice good hygiene
  • Wash your hands frequently
  • Wear a mask
  • Avoid large gatherings
  • Avoid going out when it is not necessary; allergy sufferers should reduce dust inhalation
  • Use air filters and humidifiers at home
