More than 600 delivery drivers participated in road safety awareness workshops organized by local authorities as part of the “Vision Zero” strategy in Abu Dhabi.

The workshops were aimed at reducing the number of traffic fatalities to zero, said the Integrated Transport Center (ITC) of the Abu Dhabi Department of Municipalities and Transport.

Several awareness-raising workshops held over the past few months have brought together more than 600 delivery drivers and supervisors from major companies in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

The workshops aimed to improve road safety, reduce motorcycle accidents and educate motorcycle delivery drivers on road safety requirements,” the ITC said.

According to official data from last year, in 2019, 162 accidents involving motorcyclists took place, which rose to 170 in 2020 and 210 in 2021. The number of fatalities rose from nine in 2019 to 13 in 2020.

In November 2021, the Joint Commission for Road Safety launched an awareness campaign on the safety of delivery people. The workshops were led by the Department of Municipalities and Transport and included stakeholders such as Abu Dhabi Police, Department of Health and ITC.

During the interactive workshops, riders learned about Abu Dhabi’s traffic and road safety requirements, procedures to follow when riding their motorcycles, and ways to keep themselves and others safe on the road.

They were informed about the importance of wearing proper protective equipment such as helmets, vests and proper footwear, which play a major role in reducing the severity of injuries in the event of an accident.

ITC has urged delivery companies, retailers and restaurants that provide door-to-door delivery and other related services to help educate their drivers about traffic and road safety.

“Inform drivers of applicable traffic laws and regulations and emphasize the need for them to obey speed limits and road safety requirements,” ITC told food delivery service establishments, retailers and restaurants.

It is important to focus on road safety and raise awareness among delivery people as the food delivery industry has grown rapidly in the emirate during the pandemic.

“Road safety is a shared responsibility that requires tireless efforts by everyone to reduce traffic accidents and achieve the highest levels of road safety,” ITC added.
