The soccer star has a special relationship with the Emirates
Football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo and his partner Georgina Rodriguez took to social media on Monday to share the heartbreaking news of the death of their newborn son. “It is with our greatest sadness that we have to announce the passing of our baby boy. It is the greatest pain a parent can feel.”
The whole world joined in mourning alongside the Portuguese great – and Manchester United – who is often called the greatest of all time. Despite all the adulation he received, Ronaldo, a father of five (including the deceased baby’s surviving twin sister), maintained that fatherhood is “honestly the greatest privilege I’ve had”.
“Only the birth of our little girl gives us the strength to live this moment with a little hope and happiness…”, added Georgina and him. “We are all devastated by this loss and kindly ask for confidentiality at this very difficult time.”
For the United Arab Emirates – and Dubai in particular – it probably hit harder. Ronaldo has a special relationship with this country, so the sense of loss is even more acute because we mourn a devastating tragedy that beset one of our own. The last contact Ronaldo shared with the world was his expedition to Expo2020, which he visited with his family: he said how much he and his family love Dubai and visit it every year, and how he is impressed by the Expo.
“Everything Dubai does is just amazing and impressive. I’m not surprised at things here. It’s just fantastic to see how things are made possible here. The Expo is incredibly impressive.
In response, the Crown Prince of Dubai, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, issued a warm “Dubai loves you back”.
Ronaldo and his son Cristiano Ronaldo Jr were pictured chatting with Sheikh Hamdan and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai. And that was also when Ronaldo was putting on a laser show at the Burj Khalifa to surprise Georgina on her 28th birthday. There are other links. Ronaldo was among the first recipients of the United Arab Emirates‘ golden visa. He is the official Talabat brand ambassador in the MENA region, and Talabat has a strong presence in this country.
The great footballer is at home here. “Thank you for everything @dubai #alwaystogether,” he said on social media. So at this point, when the world – and life – seems to be closing in on him, Georgina and the rest of their family in the cruellest way possible, we join, at the time of Ramadan, to offer hope and prayers.
