Travel restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic and entry requirements for international travelers are relaxed or completely eliminated around the world more than two years after the start of the global health crisis.
Nevertheless, traveling abroad is still not as easy to achieve as it was before the pandemic. Many of the world’s most visited countries have dropped all remaining restrictions, but others continue to screen arrivals in a bid to slow the spread and protect their populations.
Here’s a breakdown of what travelers can expect in the world’s top destinations by the end of 2022.
Egypt dropped COVID-19 travel restrictions on June 17.
Kenya is open to fully vaccinated travelers with no testing requirements. However, eligible unvaccinated travelers over the age of five will be required to have a negative COVID-19 PCR test taken 72 hours prior to departure and will be required to submit to a $30 rapid antigen test upon arrival.
Morocco is open to travelers who complete a health form and show proof of vaccination or a negative PCR test result that is less than 72 hours old.
South Africa is open without restrictions from the end of June.
Asia
China remains a difficult destination to visit. The US embassy and consulates in the country warn that “all incoming passengers are required to self-quarantine for at least 14 days upon arrival and that testing upon arrival and for exit from quarantine may include blood tests, as well as oral, nasal and anal swabs.
hong kong eased quarantine restrictions for international travelers, requiring three days in a quarantine hotel and four days of medical monitoring at home.
International travel to Japan remains very limited to organized group trips.
Since August 1, all travelers can enter Malaysia regardless of their COVID-19 vaccination status and do not require testing prior to departure or upon arrival.
South Korea has reopened to international travel, but visitors face testing requirements regardless of their vaccination status.
Thailand is open to fully vaccinated travelers and unvaccinated travelers with a recent negative PCR test or medically administered ATK test performed within 72 hours of travel.
Vietnam dropped COVID-related testing requirements for all international arrivals in May.
Caribbean
Aruba no longer requires travelers to provide proof of vaccination, test negative, or purchase insurance to travel.
Since June 19, fully vaccinated travelers can visit the Bahamian with proof while unvaccinated visitors aged 2 and over will require a negative PCR or rapid antigen test performed no later than three days before travel.
The British Virgin Islands removed COVID testing requirements in mid-July.
Travelers can continue to visit the Dominican Republic without any restrictions related to COVID. However, visitors arriving by air must complete the free electronic entry and exit form (E-Ticket) combining the traveler’s health certificate, customs declaration and international embarkation/disembarkation forms.
Jamaica ended its pre-trip testing requirements in April.
Porto Rico is open to international travelers with proof of vaccination while Americans can visit without restrictions.
St. LUCIA is open to fully vaccinated visitors and unvaccinated travelers aged 5 and over with proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR test taken within five days of arrival. Travelers must also complete the medical screening form.
The US Virgin Islands eliminated COVID-related entry requirements on June 1.
Europe
There are currently no pandemic-related travel restrictions for Austria.
Croatia also eliminated COVID-related entry restrictions.
France lifted its remaining COVID-19 travel restrictions on August 1, meaning travelers no longer need proof of vaccination, recovery or a negative test result to visit.
Germany is open to international visitors without any COVID-related restrictions.
Greece no longer applies travel restrictions related to COVID-19.
Travelers can also visit Iceland without worrying about pandemic-related travel restrictions.
Italy eliminated entry requirements such as proof of vaccination on June 1.
Travelers from the United States and many other countries outside of Europe can visit Amsterdam and the Netherlands as a whole with proof of vaccination or recovery from the virus.
Visitors from Spain traveling outside the European Union or Schengen countries will require a certificate proving either full vaccination, negative PCR or rapid antigen test or proof of recovery.
There are no COVID-related restrictions for travelers visiting Turkey.
The UK lifted its remaining travel-related COVID-19 restrictions in mid-March, allowing easier travel to London and other tourist destinations.
Middle East
Israel scrapped pandemic-related travel requirements in May.
Host of the 2022 World Cup, Qatar has reopened to international visitors, but travelers will want to understand their requirements, if any, based on their country of origin.
Saudi Arabia removed most COVID-19 restrictions for travelers in March, but still requires proof of insurance covering the cost of treatment in case visitors contract the virus.
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is open to travelers who can confirm proof of vaccination or present proof of recovery or a negative PCR test taken within 48 hours of arrival.
North America
Bermuda continues to be among the strictest destinations in the world, requiring proof of vaccination, a negative pre-arrival test and a $40 travel authorization.
Canada extended COVID restrictions until at least the end of September. Visitors will be required to be fully vaccinated or present a recent negative COVID-19 test and quarantine for two weeks upon arrival. Visitors must also download the ArriveCAN app to enter their traveler details.
Visitors from Mexico will not face any COVID-related travel restrictions.
The United States eliminated testing and proof of recovery requirements for international travelers in June, but still requires arriving non-nationals to have proof of vaccinations unless they are exempt.
Oceania
Australia lifted COVID-related travel restrictions in early July.
Fiji requires visitors to be fully vaccinated, have proof of insurance and pre-book a rapid antigen test to be performed upon arrival.
French Polynesia has relaxed travel requirements, making it easier to visit Tahiti, Bora Bora and other favorites. However, travelers should update according to their flight itinerary.
Travelers to New Zealand are still required to take a test on arrival and on the fifth or sixth day of their stay and complete the New Zealand Traveler Declaration Form prior to arrival.
South America
Visitors from Argentina must submit an electronic affidavit within 48 hours of departure confirming their vaccination status and absence of symptoms of COVID-19 as well as provide proof of travel medical insurance which includes hospitalization, quarantine and transportation for COVID-19 if they plan to stay longer than 24 hours.
Brazil is open to travelers with proof of vaccination before boarding their flight.
Travelers to Chile must complete the Travel Affidavit form online up to 48 hours prior to boarding.
Colombia requires international travelers to provide proof of vaccination or a negative test result taken within 48 hours (rapid antigen) or 72 hours (PCR) of travel.
Peru requires visitors to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or test negative within 48 hours of their flight. Travelers will also be required to complete a health declaration form.
