Innovative French company SeaBubbles has signed an agreement with local solution provider Al Masaood Power Division for a joint collaboration on the manufacture of hydrogen-powered flying boats in the United Arab Emirates.

Inspired by the Emirates’ scuba diving heritage, the sustainability-focused X-Pearl – the brainchild of SeaBubbles – is powered by a hydrogen-electric hybrid propulsion system and retractable foils, and available for purchase , senior officials said after signing the memorandum of understanding at the region’s biggest leisure boating event, the Dubai International Boat Show, which ends tomorrow (March 13).

The agreement will see the two parties work together to pilot and performance evaluate hydrogen-powered seaplanes, manufacture and maintain operations in the emirates, and retrofit existing boats with SeaBubbles’ sustainable powertrain system.

SeaBubbles’ watercraft can carry up to 12 passengers and a pilot, making them ideal for a range of on-water mobility solutions: electric passenger boat, zero-emission water taxi, VIP shuttle, or even for intercity transfers.

By producing minimal wake and water disturbance, it also provides a solution for ecotourism sightseeing in protected areas such as the Eastern Mangrove Wetland Reserves.

As scale models of its flagship H2 and the X-Pearl were unveiled in the Port of Dubai on Wednesday, the company hopes the limited-edition UAE model will zip along Dubai Creek, Dubai Canal or Abu Dhabi Corniche before next year’s COP28.

“The Dubai International Boat Show is iconic, so it was the perfect opportunity to reveal the X-Pearl to an international audience and show that we are heading towards this ecological transition with Al Masaood,” said Virginie Seurat, vice-president. President of SeaBubbles. .

“The MoU agreement marks another milestone in terms of promoting hydrogen mobility in the UAE. With COP28 taking place in the emirates next year, we are very excited to strengthen our local ties” , he added.

SeaBubbles’ innovative technology promises a greener future with its hydrogen fuel cells, which generate electrical power for internal systems and propulsion modules, while a battery pack sustains it during flight.

This hybrid concept guarantees 100% dependence on renewable energy sources, while its foils reduce the wetted surface and therefore energy consumption, resulting in a boat that is 35% more energy efficient than an ordinary boat. The H2 and X-Pearl can reach speeds of up to 50 km/h.

“This is the return of the Dubai International Boat Show after two years, as the show begins a new cycle, we are also starting something new and exciting with this partnership with SeaBubbles,” remarked Rasso Bartenschlager, Managing Director. of Al Masaood Power Division.

“The X-Pearl, by emitting only water, demonstrates our commitment to sustainable solutions and we are honored to sign this groundbreaking partnership which will help boost green mobility for future generations,” he said. added.
