Less than a month after its release on Netflix, fans of “Squid Game” are signing up for live events based on the South Korean drama series.

The Korean Cultural Center in the United Arab Emirates already hosted a KCC Squid Game event on Tuesday, October 12, where 30 contestants were invited to play the games from the hit show.

Participants traveled to the Abu Dhabi Cultural Center and reportedly played four of the six games featured in the series, including Red Light, Green Light; the Dalgona candy challenge; Marble Game and Ddakji – a folded paper tile game where opponents throw their tiles to the ground to try to flip the paper.

The matches were played in two sessions of one hour and 45 minutes and the players were divided into groups of 15. A report from The National News indicates that nearly 300 people have registered for the tournament in Abu Dhabi.

“Thank you all for participating in today’s event with KCC UAE,” the Korean Cultural Center wrote in a Tweeter Wednesday morning.

The tweet contained photos from the event, which show attendees donned numbered green and white jerseys inspired by the show while organizers donned near-exact replicas of what the “Squid Game” guards wore – jumpsuits shield against bright pink hazardous materials with black fencing masks.

True to the show, the guards carried firearms (in this case, fake weapons) and had shapes displayed on their masks to indicate their rank.

Approximately 4,340 miles from the cultural hub of Gangwon-do Province, South Korea, St. John’s Hotel will host a Squid Game event on October 24th.

The beachfront hotel announced in an Instagram post on Saturday that it is hosting a one-day event that will feature four sets of the show’s games, including Red Light, Green Light; tug of war; Ddakji and the dalgona candy challenge.

Aspiring players were encouraged to complete an application through a written questionnaire. Successful applicants will be formally invited and will have to “rally” in a pine forest near the St. John’s Hotel. A small fee will also be required to participate, but the event is open to the public and not just to hotel guests.

Similar to the “Squid Game” show, players will be eliminated if they lose their game or break the rules. Marketing materials from the St. John’s Hotel indicate that the event will have a “special guest” serving as the “frontman” – the game’s organizer – and his identity will be revealed at the end of the night.

The tournament’s first-place winner is reportedly winning 5 million won, which equates to approximately $ 4,210.14, at the time of publication.

On Tuesday, October 12, St. John’s Hotel updated their Instagram account to let subscribers know the registration period has ended and invitations are being sent to approved attendees.
