It’s not very often that I allow myself to have afternoon tea, not with cake anyway, but this was an exception to my overly strict rule.

In preparation for the Dubai World Cup and summer weddings, our dear friend, Evelyn McDermott [@eve_mac] aka The Hat Lady, held a stylish event at the Indigo Hotel in downtown Dubai.

We were greeted by a great display from the incredibly talented designer, Evelyn’s hats, headpieces, call them what you like, but please don’t say ‘fascinator’!

Occasions like this are a great opportunity to try out different styles and gauge which one suits and works with your face shape and hair type.

I’m always surprised by some people who look gorgeous in a hat that can look awful on the next lady, and there never seems to be a set rule for what will or won’t suit a person. You just have to keep trying them until you find the one that hits the mark.

It’s a tremendous help to have a group of like-minded women alongside Evelyn’s expertise to provide encouragement and inspiration and it often only required a little nudge to get over the step and decide on a hat or two or maybe even three. All stored discreetly in our cupboards and made when the day comes, often to the sound of the voices of the husbands, “new hat darling?”

“No dear, I’ve had it for ages”, being the standard response!
