ABU DHABI, December 5, 2021 (WAM) – NYU Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) will represent the United Arab Emirates (UAE) with two other universities, the University of Sharjah and the University of the United Arab Emirates, as a cluster institution in the ATLAS experiment, one of the largest collaborative efforts ever in science.

ATLAS is a particle physics experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) of CERN, the European Organization for Research in Nuclear and Particle Physics (CERN), one of the world’s largest and most respected in the world.

NYUAD, the University of Sharjah and the University of the United Arab Emirates will cooperate and develop a cohesive effort in the ATLAS experiment – one of the largest collaborative efforts ever attempted in science, a particle physics experiment at the Grand Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN.

The signing of the MoU between CERN, Geneva, the ATLAS cluster of the United Arab Emirates and the University took place during an event organized by the science division of NYUAD. Andreas Hoecker, ATLAS 2021-2023 elected spokesperson, delivered a speech and co-signed the memorandum of understanding with NYUAD Vice-Chancellor Mariët Westermann and NYUAD Dean of Science and Professor of Physics, and ATLAS team leader Marta Losada to mark the start of the collaboration. .

Marta Losada was already part of the large-scale international collaboration ATLAS that discovered the Higgs boson in 2012, an elementary component within the framework of physics that defines everything in the known universe. The observation of the particle was the last hidden component on the path to the solidification of the fundamental model of physics.

Losada commented, “It is such a rewarding and inspiring time at the same time. The exploration of ATLAS pushes the boundaries of knowledge by seeking answers to fundamental questions and it is such a privilege for us to be part of this quest for the unknown. NYUAD has enormous potential, I only had to come here once to recognize it and this collaboration is an unprecedented opportunity for the advancement of science at NYUAD and the development of research capacity in the United Arab Emirates. . “

ATLAS is a collaboration of physicists, engineers, technicians, students and support staff from around the world, who continue to uncover some of the most significant innovative developments in technology and physics in the search for the unknown; explore and discover new phenomena beyond existing theoretical predictions. ATLAS physicists study the fundamental constituents of matter to better understand the rules of their interactions. Their research led to groundbreaking discoveries, like that of the Higgs boson.
