Dubai’s flagship airline, Emirates Airline, has closed its onboard lounges and social spaces for passengers aboard its A380 aircraft for the safety of travelers due to an increase in coronavirus cases.

On average, more than two million new cases daily have been reported in the past seven days, while global new cases have increased by 270% since the discovery of the Omicron variant in South Africa in late November.

“In light of health and safety considerations, Emirates has temporarily changed certain aspects of our on-board service. Our onboard lounge and social area will not be available to customers at this time, ”an Emirates spokesperson said in a statement to Khaleej weather.

In October 2020, Emirates rolled out a redesigned A380 experience with the introduction of additional health and safety measures. The airline has also improved its offering by introducing a nutrient-rich welcome drink for the winter season.

The carrier, which has resumed operations on 90% of its pre-pandemic network and serves more than 120 destinations worldwide through its hub in Dubai, announced earlier in December that its members will have access to more than 120 lounges. by February 2022.

At the end of December, the Emirates lounges at many UK airports including London Heathrow, Birmingham and Manchester were reopened for customers while the London Gatwick and Glasgow lounges will receive customers in January 2022.

In Europe, the Emirates lounges in Germany, namely Munich, Frankfurt and Düsseldorf, in addition to the Milan and Rome lounges, have already reopened for passengers while the Hamburg and Paris lounges were opened last month.

In addition, Covid-19 safety rules have been tightened at Dubai International (DXB) with the introduction of random PCR tests performed on passengers arriving on certain flights.

In December, random PCR tests were carried out on passengers arriving from the UK. While the validity of the PCR test on passengers arriving from some countries has also been reduced to 48 hours, including UK, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Sudan and Zambia.

“Emirates apologizes for any inconvenience caused. The safety of our customers and our crew is of the utmost importance and will not be compromised, ”the airline spokesperson said in a statement after the lounge and social space on board the planes closed. .
