ASPIRE launches the Grand Challenge Maritime MBZIRC of 3 million dollars


ASPIRE Abu Dhabi, a technology unit of the Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC), will organize the Mohamed Bin Zayed International Robotics Challenge (MBZIRC) in June 2023, where technological innovators will participate in the search for security solutions and maritime security to win over $ 3 million in prizes.

Organized by ASPIRE, the MBZIRC is held every two years. The next edition, called MBZIRC Maritime Grand Challenge, focuses on real-time solutions to maritime safety and security challenges and seeks to claim its place among the largest and most prestigious AI and robotics competitions in the world.

The Challenge is open to international universities, research institutes, businesses and individual innovators from around the world. It will involve heterogeneous collaboration between unmanned aerial vehicles and unmanned surface vehicles, to perform complex navigation and manipulation tasks in a non-GNSS environment. The call for entries is now open.

Faisal Al Bannai, ATRC General Secretary, said: “We are proud that MBZIRC is going global by inviting top talent from around the world to participate. We’ve set a tough real-world challenge that will push participants to the limits of their abilities. The event is a great opportunity to demonstrate the pioneering scientific research work taking place in Abu Dhabi and the United Arab Emirates. “

The challenge will show how the two entities are focusing on niche technology areas, while attracting global innovators to stimulate ideas, encourage collaboration and push the boundaries of cutting-edge technologies to find system solutions to global challenges.

“For countries with long coasts, ensuring maritime safety requires significant investments in sophisticated equipment and highly qualified personnel,” said Dr Arthur Morrish, CEO of ASPIRE.

“The use of advanced robotic systems can not only help reduce costs, but also manage some of the often dangerous tasks performed by humans. The motivation for organizing the MBZIRC Maritime Grand Challenge is to take the technology out of the lab and test it in a real environment to see what is possible.

Dr Morrish highlighted the dual purpose of the competition: one is to focus on important robotics autonomy issues while engaging the global community in a difficult robotics challenge. The other is to find a solution to a real world challenge that the world is facing.

The challenge is for a UAV swarm to identify a target vessel among several similar vessels in open waters in a denied GNSS environment, and to unload specific elements of the target onto a USV in the shortest possible time using autonomous technologies. This is a new type of exercise in autonomous robotics. “A good thing about this challenge is that you tell people what you want, but you don’t specify an approach to do it,” Dr Morrish added.
