Artists from the UAE and Italy ‘reimagine’ each other’s folk tales in new exhibition

Five UAE artists have reimagined Italian legends and fables through the lens of their unique ideas, expressions and perspectives, while Italian artists have been commissioned to do the same with some of the UAE’s best-known tales. .

Held as part of the ‘BOOM! The Grow with Books festival alongside BCBF 2022, the exhibition embodies Sharjah and Bologna’s vision of strengthening cultural dialogue and the exchange of creative ideas between the two cities. The project showcased new creative perspectives for artists, illustrators and the children’s literature industry in both countries, and the resulting exhibition provided the community with a dynamic platform for cross-cultural appreciation. .

UAEBBY also hosted a panel discussion at BCBF 2022 to highlight the artistic and cultural experiences and learnings of participants in the “Folktales Reimagined” project. The discussion was moderated by Nicoletta Gramantei, Head of the Salaborsa Ragazzi Library; Amira Bin Faris, program manager, House of Wisdom; Francesca Dell’orto, Illustrator; Ayesha Al Badi, Illustrator; the panel was moderated by Dr. Yasmine Motawy, Senior Lecturer at the American University in Cairo, Egypt.

Speakers discussed the revitalization of folktales through such projects and empowered children’s book illustrators to push their creative boundaries by embarking on a cross-cultural artistic journey like that offered to them by “Folktales Reimagined”. They also emphasized that stories serve as a link for dialogue and understanding between peoples and cultures and promote the exchange of ideas between readers, editors and authors.
