In a bold and unexpected move, the Washington Commanders have elevated David Blough to the role of offensive coordinator, as reported by ESPN. This decision comes just two years after he joined the team as an assistant quarterbacks coach. The promotion follows the recent departure of Kliff Kingsbury, the former offensive coordinator, who and the Commanders decided to part ways due to differing visions for the team's future offensive strategy.
Blough, who stepped into the quarterbacks coach position following Tavita Pritchard's transition to head coach at Stanford University, brings a wealth of experience from his playing days in the NFL. Over a five-season career with four different teams, Blough participated in nine games, starting seven of them. His knowledge of the game has garnered attention, as the Detroit Lions also expressed interest in him for their offensive coordinator vacancy. Recognizing his potential, the Commanders were keen to retain Blough, despite his relatively young age of 29.
It's interesting to note that during Dan Quinn's tenure with the Atlanta Falcons, he allowed several promising coaches like Mike McDaniel and Matt LaFleur to leave when Kyle Shanahan took over as head coach in San Francisco. In contrast, the Commanders are holding onto Blough, who was also sought after by teams such as the Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, and New York Jets last offseason.
Blough's journey has included time with the Lions, where he spent the years 2019 to 2021 and spent time on their practice squad in 2023. He joined the Commanders staff under Kingsbury, having played for him briefly in 2022 before being released. Kingsbury has spoken highly of Blough's football intelligence, citing his experience across various systems, notably under offensive minds like Ben Johnson in Detroit and Kevin O'Connell in Minnesota.
"He's incredibly bright, no doubt about it," Kingsbury remarked recently. "Having been around some exceptional offensive thinkers, his greatest strengths lie in his ability to view the game from a player's perspective while maintaining the necessary distance to coach effectively."
Blough forged a close bond with Washington quarterback Jayden Daniels, often engaging in a fun pre-practice routine of playing a football variation of H-O-R-S-E every Friday. However, Kingsbury noted that Blough is also quite demanding with players, which likely stems from his own experiences as a player who understood the importance of maximizing each opportunity.
"He knew he had to extract every bit of performance from every throw and drill," Kingsbury said. "You can see this reflected in his coaching style. He won’t allow players to slack off; he holds them accountable, always pushing for better execution. This approach has certainly benefited the quarterback room, as they respect his honesty and appreciate that he has walked the same path they are on."
