Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2024: Major Structural Reforms Announced! (2026)

Get ready, cricket fans, because the Pakistan Super League (PSL) is undergoing a massive transformation! The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has just unveiled significant structural reforms, and they're set to shake up the league as we know it.

The most exciting change? The PSL is ditching the old draft system, which has been in place since its inception in 2016, and embracing a player auction. This means teams will now bid for players, just like in other major leagues around the world.

But that's not all. The total amount of money each franchise can spend on players, also known as the purse, has been bumped up. Teams will now have USD 1.6 million to spend, a significant increase from the previous USD 1.3 million. This could lead to some serious bidding wars!

PSL CEO Salman Naseer believes these reforms, coming ahead of the league's 11th edition, will supercharge the PSL's growth, make the competition even fiercer, and show its commitment to staying innovative.

"The PSL will now transition from a draft to players auction system which should increase transparency and enhance the competitive balance of teams in the league," Naseer said. He also highlighted that the changes will open up greater earning opportunities for the players.

Here's where things get interesting: The reforms also impact how teams can retain players. Previously, each franchise could keep up to eight players, including a mentor, a brand ambassador, and the option to match a bid for a ninth player in the draft. Now, teams can only retain a maximum of four players, with a limit of one player per category. The roles of mentor, brand ambassador, and the right to match option have been eliminated.

Furthermore, the two new teams joining the league, Hyderabad and Sialkot, will get a head start. They'll be allowed to select four players from the available player pool before the player auction even begins.

And to add even more spice, each franchise will be allowed to directly sign one foreign player who didn't play in PSL 10. This is a clever move, allowing teams to strategically bolster their squads with fresh international talent.

This is a bold move by the PCB. Do you think these reforms will make the PSL more exciting and competitive? Are you happy to see the draft system go? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
