The Glazers, who acquired a controlling stake of the club in 2005, have long been the target of fan fury. The 1958 fan group, leading the charge against the owners, organized yet another demonstration, this time ahead of the Premier League clash against Fulham. "United are being dragged through chaos by clown ownership," the group claimed. And this is the part most people miss: it's not just about the results on the pitch. Steve Crompton, spokesperson for the 1958, emphasized that their protest is about the bigger picture.
"It's about the partnership with Ineos and the Glazers," Crompton explained. "The last few games have been great, but that's not the point. We want our football club back."
The protest saw fans chanting, holding banners, and even setting off flares as they marched down Sir Matt Busby Way. The atmosphere was intense, with Greater Manchester Police estimating between 500 and 600 protesters, yet no arrests were made.
But the real issue, according to Crompton, is the impact on the fans themselves. With ticket pricing and availability causing anger, fans are being priced out of attending matches. "It's becoming unaffordable," he said. "We want a great atmosphere in the ground, created by fans, not by corporate hospitality."
The protest was announced 24 days ago, shortly after Ruben Amorim's sacking, and the 1958 group made it clear that this demonstration is about more than just the manager or players.
"We'll always back the team," Crompton added. "But we won't be punished for wanting to support our club."
