Avatar: Fire and Ash Box Office Shock! Will It Lose #1 to 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple? (2026)

Is the magic fading? The highly anticipated Avatar: Fire and Ash is projected to lose its top spot at the domestic box office much sooner than its predecessors, sparking questions about the franchise's future. This James Cameron film, the third installment in the Avatar saga, hit theaters on December 19, 2025, and quickly soared to number one, mirroring the success of the original Avatar (2009) and Avatar: The Way of Water (2022). But, the reign might be shorter than expected.

Avatar: Fire and Ash had a strong start, securing the second-best opening weekend of the trilogy. However, the film is expected to earn between $12 and $14 million over the Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend. Meanwhile, the horror sequel 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple is predicted to debut with $20 to $22 million during the same period. This could mean Fire and Ash will lose its top position after only four consecutive weekends, falling short of the seven-weekend streaks achieved by the previous Avatar films.

And this is the part most people miss... This early decline raises concerns about Fire and Ash's ability to reach the coveted $2 billion worldwide milestone, a feat accomplished by the first two Avatar movies. These earlier films went on to become the first and third highest-grossing movies of all time.

Despite these concerns, Fire and Ash is still a major success, already grossing over $2.32 billion worldwide and currently ranking as the 29th highest-grossing film ever.

But here's where it gets controversial... The upcoming 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple also faces its own challenges. The sequel to the 2025 film 28 Years Later had a 3-day debut of $30 million, which is higher than the projected 4-day opening weekend for The Bone Temple. The original film had a budget of $60 million and barely broke even, with a total theatrical run of $151.3 million. Considering The Bone Temple's higher budget of $63 million, its performance could impact the future of the new trilogy.

The fact that The Bone Temple is likely to surpass Avatar: Fire and Ash highlights the sci-fi sequel's declining audience retention rather than the horror movie's inherent strength.
